Read Ecclesiastes if you haven't, it's just a few short pages of the most profound wisdom of life. Its brevity makes it a very easy read, it was actually my introduction to Christianity in my late teens, I don't even remember how I came across it but I'm glad I did. It just takes about 20 minutes so I recommend anyone curious in the bible to read it as a sort of introduction.

That’s where we disagree fundamentally about the purpose of church. You begin from a perspective of looking at it as a punishment, where as black churches largely view it as an opportunity to connect with their creator and their community. Having attended a majority white and a majority black Catholic church (so an apples to apples comparison), I can say unequivocally that the black church experience is joyful; the white one feels more like a chore.
