The International Tribunal for Maritime Law today decided to oblige the Russian Federation to release 24 Ukrainian sailors and three Ukrainian ships that were captured in the Kerch Strait area in November 2018. The broadcast was conducted on the website of the court.
The decision of the court was announced by the judge from South Korea, Park Jin Hyun.
"The court considers it necessary to demand from Russia to immediately release the three detained Ukrainian ships Nikopol, Berdyansk and Yana Kapu, as well as 24 detained sailors, and allow them to return to Ukraine," the chairman of the tribunal said. The decision was made almost unanimously. Only the judge from the Russian Federation Roman Kolodkin voted against.
The Russian side was absent at the meeting. The judge recalled that this fact is not grounds for the refusal of the Russian Federation to execute the decision of the tribunal.
The UN International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is located in Hamburg.
The Russian Foreign Ministry, in turn, believes that the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea does not have jurisdiction to consider the “Kerch incident”. The corresponding statement was made by the ministry on April 16.
