From bus drivers to high ranking politicians, basically everyone can join. What does it take you say? But what happens when a Mafia Boss and the police chief meet at the same place to preform these so called rituals, then meet later for coffee? What could be discussed outside of meetings is not even regulated by the rules of the meetings themselves, religion and politics may be off the table at the meetings, but no mention of them outside is prohibited.
To understand masonry is to understand the word conspiracy it's self, one may begin to render images of the WTC when they hear the word, or think of shape shifting lizards. But the definition of the word is: a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful. And that's exactly the types of things we as a society should be afraid of.
Masonry could be a hot bed of conspiracies due to the ranging professions of the members and their places in society. As stated before, some one who is part of a criminal enterprise could meet someone who has political or law enforcement positions and they could arrange a deal. A simple monthly fee could ensure the criminal enterprise is kept off the radar, while at the same time their competition could be targeted by law enforcement to assert the dominance of the conspiring party.
Not all conspiracies that could be carried out by masons are this though, lets make it a little more simple. What if a bunch of different people met together and one business owner wanted their help in making sure that his business was the one getting most sales. Crooked health inspectors, street level thugs, could be used to bring ruin to his competition. Bringing them bad publicity and elevating the business of the conspiring party.

All I have to say is the Lodge is pretty great. We all meet as equals and arent shat on by pompous fag boys that look down on you based off which walk of life you are from. Lodge made me a better man and brought me out of my shell. I can speak infront of large groups and I am way more social. Before I was involved in masonry, I couldnt even talk to strangers at a party. Im 26 now so it has really helped me make more friends and even advance in my job because I communicate with customers so well. Dont knock it until you try it. As for criminals joining, well if you have no criminal record they realisticly could join aslong as nobody within the lodge has anything significant to say against you. Thats all I can really say about the process to be admitted. But whats done outside lodge as you said, cant be controlled, but to be fair. Anyone can meet anyone depending on situation and can collude to do whatever they need to. Especially 'mobsters' who can purchase tickets for dinners with politicians. Which personally I would be more concerned about rather than an over imaginative view of a society of good men who care about thier god and their country.
