It is less the money that spoils it, it merely is the medium through which it is done. Any sort of exchange, trade, or anything similar can fit its role.
What I view as the degenerating factor is the intent of the action. That is a good question, actually. Can't say I am entirely sure. For there are those legitimately looking for a relationship and therefore, for love, be it out of desparation or because of the experiences of their peers, so I cannot declare that any and all bar hook-ups, or hook-ups in general are degenerate in nature.

Of course, then there are those who only perform such acts as a means of pleasure, which I'd see to be degenerate. One night stands follow suit in that, with a potential exception for those one-night stands that start of out desperation for love, yet end in one day due to either the other party being degenerate, or due to the two simply not matching together.
