Thing is, people have always had to take most news on faith. Used to be you'd browse a newspaper and watch 30 minutes of TV news, and that's what you got other than what you might hear around the water cooler.
I think the difference is that people now think they're really super-informed because of the 24/7 news and social media, when they're really no more informed than ever, or maybe less, since it's almost entirely propaganda. They get much more invested and angry about it because they think they KNOW more than people used to.
