I think I have a piece of someone's roof in my yard. Outside of that, everything's fine here. Kid's at the neighbor's house were in the pool when the siren went off. Pretty much no warning at all - no wind or rain. Then out of no where, lots of wind and a little bit of rain.

That's a myth. You'll find very few basements in Oklahoma. The reason is because the dirt is red clay, which absorbs water, and makes the water table higher than usual. As far as people dying because of his advice, no... but ONLY because the tornado lifted before it got to the city. People did die from this tornado outside of the city, though - google: moore tornado ... a school was destroyed, while kids were there.
