A guerilla band could mop the floor with the US military because it would be nearly impossible to reciprocate an attack without killing hundreds of American civilians. No EZ mode carpet bombs and drone missiles because they actually have to care about casualties and infrastructure unlike in the middle east where they have no skin in the game so they don't give a shit.

A guerilla band does need the support of a large chunk of the populace though, which a communist group would certainly not get in America. The insurgency would have to be an independent one, at least on the surface, to not get outright wiped off the map.
