I started taking saw palmetto, which blocks DHT, and my hair came back within six month. My beard, which wasn't all that thin, filled in significantly. Down side it that I also grew much more arm, leg and chest hair. It's a little much.

My method is first pass with safety razor with grain. Apply more shaving cream and go against grain carefully with safety razor. Then apply a little more cream again and do a final pass against the grain with a cheap Bic or whatever is on sale at wal mart plastic razor. This last step really helps you get a close shave because you don’t have to be very careful and can get the tough spots around the nose, lips and neck one last time without the risk of a cut.
