Also I can't speak for 'prison guards that you read about in the paper' but our jails are mismanaged. Sometimes there are some problems logistically and not enough meals were ordered/prepared for the day or the inmate didn't state that they were on Ramadon.
Either way you're hearing about it because some inmate cried to his lawyer who cried to our ministry or a judge and was awarded for the indignity he experienced when he didn't receive his 5 star meal.

yes. Same here. Our units are open dorm. 39 detainee's to 1 officer and you're in there alone with them.
They're supermax btw, the people in charge think "if we expect them to behave, they will". So they throw us in there.
I worked divison 9, also supermax, all murderes who are facing 20-60 or life.

Yes, I do. I have only worked floors. I have not yet been outside on patrol or court but I'm in the process for it. We're all deputies, whether on street, inside or in court. Difference is, no guns inside obviously.

Well how are your staff assaults?
We have 3 on average per day.
Our inmates get 15 days in seg a few months in the shu and so on after staff assaults. Serious staff assaulters get back on direct supervision units within months sometimes.
Our officers have started street charging these guys but our judges love inmates for some reason.
