There's never been a good answer to this. One common explanation is that Himmler witnessed a mass execution on the Eastern Front and was convinced they needed a mass extermination method that was kinder on the executioners, so they invented the gas chamber method.

This explanation doesn't hold any water though since gas chambers and "pure" extermination camps were already in full swing in december 1941 before Himmlers visit to the Eastern Front.

But the funniest part is the comically small size of the homicidal gas chambers in all 4 of the Operation Reinhard camps -- each camp was built one after another and all of them had cartoonishly small gas chambers where you could only fit a small number of people -- yet they claim these camps were built solely for mass gassings.
