My ancestors during the Civil War period didn't even grow cotton. Far as local history goes they were livestock farmers and they and most of the others in their county became southern unionists and joined the Union Army. That said slaves were a status symbol in the south and it played a big role in letting southern aristocrats live out like European nobility.

Southerners were already experimenting with getting rid of blacks. Most of the important members of the American Colonization Society were southerners. Multiple factors made Liberia unsuccessful. That said slavery was extremely profitable and if slave owners succeeded in spreading slavery to the western territories slavery would've only boomed in value even more. Slavery was also an important way for the south to have a lot of power in Congress through the 3/5th compromise. It was also just a huge cultural element and someone who could own slaves were seen as wealthy and better than those who couldn't. On the other hand Lincoln's attempts at setting up a new colony in Central America kept failing for various reasons and influential black leaders like Douglass were telling Lincoln they didn't want to leave to the point Lincoln essentially gave up on ever removing blacks. Maybe if he lived longer he would've tried again but I can't see another attempt succeeding any better than the last dozen times America tried before and during the war. You even had guys like Marcus Garvey way later on try and fail. Hell the Nation of Islam bought some farms in the south and couldn't get hardly any black men to work them

Proof? The American Colonization Society was an American entity that involved both northern and southern people coming to a common cause. What other instances do you have?

You're ignoring the most important members of the American Colonization Society were southern. Yes it had northern and southern members but if you look into the group's most important members it was widely southern. Hell Lincoln got his ideas from the southerner Henry Clay who was one of the group's most famous members. Several southern states were also supporting the group and setting up shop in Liberia although that did lead some issues where states started competing on who could benefit off Liberia the most. That said almost every southern Whig in general was for deporting blacks and Whigs were a pretty powerful group in the upper south especially and those Whigs were later southern unionists then Republicans. The issue is the south wasn't a united political force so you had hardcore slavery supporters who refused to support the project and you had abolitionists in the north who spread propaganda to blacks that the group was lying to them. This issue would've been the same for anything anyone tried because there just wasn't anyone with enough guts to really push for it and stick with it. Even Lincoln eventually crumbled when given enough backlash.

Other than that off the top of my head I know a Florida governor post-Civil War asked for the federal government to buy land to place all of the blacks in but I don't think he was picky about whether it was outside of US territory or not as long as all blacks stayed in that area, never left, and no whites ever entered. The issue was the federal government never started a project and stuck with it which lowered any confidence that a Back to Africa movement could ever work.
