No. Gas prices were increased in the name of environmentalism. The French people aren't inherently against environmental actions (France is a leader in nuclear power for instance), but they're tired of being asked to make personal sacrifices in austerity measures while wealth balloons at the tops, jobs are outsourced, automation replaces labor, culture degrades, benefits are further cut, etc. Life is generally getting harder for everyone else and sweeter for the few in control. That's what they're protesting.
