He has a line, from the movie, that people have a hard time holding competing ideas at once- and that, he says, seems to be part of the problem.
His hypothesis is that mass exposure to viruses is what destroys the immune system- and as such, that abstaining from collecting too many viruses will likely keep you from developing AIDS.
And Mullis was (is?) working on a drug that would help the body react to viruses. Not sure how related to AIDS, but seems so.
Hopefully the project is alive, but has gone dark due to secrecy, rather than failure.

Question for clarification: Duesberg says HIV doesn't turn into AIDS because no virus can lay dormant in the body for years, only to get worse. Apparently, a virus will be dealt with by the body immediately and what you then see on a test are antibodies, not the virus itself.
But what about herpes? You get that once and you then get symptoms for the rest of your life.

First, what Duesberg says here is not a proof, but just evidence towards a opinion.
And the difference between herpes and HIV is that herpes has an initial outbreak that is like the rest, whereas for HIV people report feeling flu-like symptoms shortly before they test positive for it.

Duesberg doesn't say that a virus can't do X, but that it would be irregular. So much of the HIV/AIDS isn't that "it's not possible," but that "it would be unusual."

The virus particle consists of 15 types of protein (pic related... it's an HIV capsid) and a piece of RNA (substance similar to DNA).
The virus RNA interacts with the DNA of human immune cells, forcing these to make moar virus proteins and copies of the virus RNA, which assemble into new viruses.
The virus can only be transmitted if the blood is directly exposed to it. This is why you can usually only get it from receiving anal sex (getting fucked in the ass rather than fucking someone else in the ass). The anus is not meant for sex, it is meant for shitting. Getting fucked in the ass causes many minute tears to appear along the sides of the rectum, exposing the blood to whatever is being pumped in. Hence the prevalence of HIV/AIDS among homosexuals. For normal couples engaging in normal sex, transmission is far less common.
The most foolproof transmission method, however, is sharing heroin needles, since these will be directly contaminated with substantial amounts of blood. But if you are doing heroin anyway, you shouldn't care, because you are most likely going to die very soon anyway.
