You are likely right. The only scenario where being nice leads to resentment is when you are being nice for egoistical reasons. i.e. expecting something in return. If you are being nice for the joy of being nice, no kind of reaction to your niceties can bring you down. The point is if you create a universe and want friends, you can't just create them as robots that love you, it wouldn't be real. In general a lot of christian symbolism goes back to the sun. In example the cross with the circle around, also called suncross likely comes from the zodiac cross upon which the sun "stands".
