Made enough money to upgrade her machine to a DDR2 era machine with a phenom ii x4 965 and had enough left to buy a HD 7970 (£70 accepted my offer).

Well it does somewhat compete with the 2080, it was obvious when they presented it that it wasn't meant for gaming but production or other purposes mainly.

The way VEGA and HBM2 are designed is that it need a lot of bandwith
VEGA 56/64 for example are literally cut in half in terms of performance because the bandwith is halfed with only 8gb of hbm2
