Lance of Longinus and other iconography aside, there are accounts from Basil of a similar event in the sky. The German account, IIRC, includes descriptions of crashes and burning metal wreckage in the countryside.
I'm not, definitely not, saying old accounts are aliums, just that there are consistent recordings of similar, obviously real, events.
