How does every other tribal 'civilization' function? They weren't evil, they were people that formed tribes. Their goal was to survive. Some tribes focused on following the buffalo herds, some tribes did a lot of fishing, others were focused on warfare. Tribes fight each other all of the time. Sometimes they do horrible things to each other. The Europeans showed up and wanted to live there too. They encountered the tribes and were sometimes friendly and other times it they fought. In the end, the Europeans were able to survive and proliferate better then the natives. The natives didn't want to lose their heritage so the Europeans gave them reservations. It's not complicated. It's just the history of human populations interacting with each other. The same story that's been told over and over for all of human history. There are no bad guys. Do not weep for the native peoples. No one will weep for you when history repeats itself once again.

Injuns are the only reason MemeMagic is able to function.

There were so many tribes with different cultures languages etc. Such a complicated political history with tribes making alliances with various European powers against others. The fact that it gets reduced to 'The evil Europeans came and stole the humble natives land!' is just beyond disappointing.

But also kind of true. Except for the humble part. Every indian nation thought they could jew the wideeyes and the other tribes into wiping each other out, and every indian nation failed. This being said, the wideeyes tried to genocide hundreds of post-apocalyptic stone-age societies and for the most part failed miserably. With Gatling guns. And repeating rifles. And cannon. And even fucking residential schools. Against stone age bows and trade muskets at best. Against a mostly matriarchal culture with democratically elected leaders. When the early explorers arrived, they brought smallpox with them. 100+ years passed before the first settlers arrived, but by then 78-90% of the mutated migrated asians that we call 'native americans' had been decimated by the disease. (scholars only disagree on percentage wiped out.)
At first the settlers got along with the natives as much as possible and it was going ok. But the french-indian war happened. Both the French and English armies arrived behind the settlers. They manipulated different Indian tribes to do their dirty work and ambush settlers and soldiers, plus this escalated the tensions between Indian tribes which placed themselves on either the French or English side. Settlers defended themselves against the attacks, Indians got the short end of every stick. After the French/Indian war, there 'natives' had been pushed out past the frontier, but also went willingly because of how used they were by both armies.
Take away:
Settlers got along with the Indians fine at first.
Then the militaries of two countries fucked shit up trying to wrest power for their respective governments.

There were hundreds of tribes across the Americas, some of them like the Iroquois confederacy were very civilized and peaceful, the US constitution actually was influenced by the structure of the Iroquois confederacy. Some tribes like the Apache or the Seminole were little more than nomadic raiders who preyed on both whites and other Indians.

Ultimately the Indians never had a chance of keeping their lands. 90% to 95% of them died of old world diseases in the first two decades following the arrival of Columbus. This left a small population to defend vast swaths of territory against technologically superior and better organized European colonists. Their fate was inevitable.

There is no generalization that really fits. Different tribes, different behaviors. Some traveled with the seasons and the buffalo and grew crops as best they could. Others only pillaged, raped, and murdered.
