Here's the trouble we're facing - we have a big pot of mandatory spending obligations (social security/Medicare/VA expenses/etc.) along with interest payments on the existing debt. We can't afford this through federal revenues, so we are running large deficits each year.
Eventually, those expenses will grow to the point where weird things will start to happen. Perhaps we won't be able to meet the anticipated interest payments at the anticipated time. Perhaps quality of services will start to erode, badly, for a variety of reasons. Eventually, the government will start having to buy its own debt to cover the federal budget deficit.
And that's usually the last thing that indebted third-world nations do before they give up and just stop paying for stuff entirely.
