The problem is that most countries don't have a term to distinguish between ethnicity and citizenship. People in the UK can choose to call themselves English as an ethnic group or British as a citizen whereas in America regardless of where the parents are from if they are born there they are always accepted as being an American with the different subgroups being entirely optional additions (Native/Latino/African - American)
