Both hillary and trump were awful choices, but there is a key difference between them. Hillary wants to be liked and Trump couldn't care less what you think of him.
Trump was therefore the better choice because he could make necessary but unpopular decisions regarding border security, foreign trade, and religious freedoms (hint: muslims shouldn't have any). Hillary would have rolled on all of those.
Trump is ineffective which is unfortunate, but he still beats Hillary because at least he's trying.
