It's survivability in a warfare situation is greater than it's predecessors and competitors, and thus it's investment is more likely to be a smaller one over the lifetime of the aircraft given a warfare situation develops.
Considering the nature of warfare, most attacks are conducted far beyond the puny humans ability to accurately target and thus "kill" any aircraft over it's boarders, or what have you...
Concurrently, the advancements in radar to track aircraft, and missiles and other radar/infrared guided weapon systems are NECESSARY in the modern aerial combat theatre.
As a stealth missile/bomb aircraft, the F-35 is uniquely suited to the role of advanced-survivability long-range precise-target warhead delivery system.
TL;DR
it's extremely resistant to missiles, and has supercruise.

F-35 is made to resist SAM's (Surface to Air Missiles)
It's more survivable in battlefield conditions, especially considering that it usually uses precision strike munitions from above most S.A.M's effective range.
