I have also entertained the possibility originally proposed by von neuman where automated machines could be sent to mars which has a lot of iron ore/rust. The process of smelting the ore could be used to produce more machines but also separate iron oxide gets you oxygen aswell and could be used to make inhabitable bio domes. Venus and flying cities are cooler though and terraforming venus is ultimately more rewarding.

Weapons are so deadly now and cultural ideas about social justice and human dignity are so widespread and sticky that if you actually tried to do a huge war of extermination it would definitely fail and just end up throwing everything into chaos and setting us back decades or worse.
