If you are asking about the underlying motivations of Leftists, it's pretty simple. Leftism historically has been the movement of the Have Not's vs. the Have's. Leftism is the politics of resentment of successful and powerful men and everything they build. The resentment of the Gorgeous Aryan by the Hideous Jew.

But to get back on topic, the liberal bias in academia serves to placate people who feel marginalized by society, to direct their attention towards surface-level social issues rather than the economic structures that create them. Take a look at any self-proclaimed communist groups at universities today: they're all too busy trying to show solidarity with BLM and people of color, or protesting Trump to even engage with genuine economic struggle.
Referring to this liberal bourgeois identity politics as Marxism just diverts people from dealing with the real source of the problem, and validates the positions of the so-called revolutionaries pushing this garbage.
