The Liberty was an electronic intelligence gathering vessel, and it had been sent to the eastern Mediterranean to monitor radio communications. Nevertheless, the Liberty managed to get off one radio message to the U.S. Sixth Fleet reporting the attack and calling for help. As soon as the Jews realized that the Sixth Fleet had received the Liberty’s signal, the attacks were halted. Any survivors in the water then would have been killed by the Jews. No one would be able to prove the Jews had done it, and it could be blamed on the Egyptians.
