It is the basis of knowledge. Basically the scientific method. That is why science has theories and doesn't profess to know the truth. They know only as much as has been observed and measured.
The point of faith is that it is not based on factual observations and measurements. Religion requires you to make a leap of faith and assume something to be true without evidence.
That leap, is the difference between believing and not believing. The absence of evidence of the existence of a god is not evidence that god does not exist. And thus atheism itself also makes an unfounded claim.

This is key. I think Norm Macdonald pointes this out. All atheists argue against the Christian God. They aren’t arguing against Zeus whenever they claim there’s no Creator. Why do they all equate the Christian God with God? Why does He make them so mad such that they constantly thrash and gnarl at Him even when no one has brought Him up? Because they KNOW in their heart of hearts that he exists. Their supposed rejection of His existence is just a veiled rejection of Him, who they know exists. You see, I asked, if God worked through the pathways which he has established in the universe and which we interact with a daily basis, that does not mean miracles don't happen but rather we can't detect miracles. When I said it was impossible I'm basically asserting a forcefully agnostic point of view, because neither you nor I can say that a miracle can or can't happen if miracles happen in the way I suggest they might.
