The unfortunate results of the Civil War were due to the length of the war, Lincoln's early death, and the succession of bad leaders (Johnson and then the Radical Republican) who didn't enact any of his colonization/Back to Africa ideas.

Based on my own experiences, most Americans have some kind of deep illness that is disconnection from any sense of history or identity, or of being part of something bigger.

Maybe, a long time ago, you had an idea of an "American identity" and was proud of it, but since then, individualism and consumerism have taken over in your country.

The South was never going to send them back on their own. The south rebelled before LIncoln was even inaugurated, and they rebelled not because he wanted to free the slaves, but because he wanted to limit the expansion of slavery to the west. Lincoln wanted white only communities (like his home of Illinois) in the West and because of that the south rebelled.

Geopolitically speaking letting the south secede would be a disaster for the US, so there's simply no way to just let them leave without a fight even without regard to slavery. That's why there was some truth to the idea the Civil War wasn't only about slavery, there was simply no way for a sane president, from a geopolitical perspective to allow a huge rival spring up overnight on the countries doorstep, a rival which btw from day one was asking for foreign intervention from Britain and France to attack the US.

The 13th amendment was a congressional initiative only possible while the south was rebelling. Lincoln actually wanted the South readmitted back into the Union as quickly as possible to counter the Radical Republicans.

Most families were small farmers in villages, craftsmen in towns and traders in small cities, only a small elite were slave owners.

These people owned all the cotton plantations.
Why does that matter?

What did they produce?
Their Wealth entirely was based upon the large-scale production of clothing, weaving.

The south provided almost the entire Western world with Cotton, British industrialization, industrialization itself, was only possible because of massive amounts of Southern Cotton. Same for France and the Netherlands, all dependant on Southern Cotton.

50% of the US GDP was based on cotton, cotton-production, cotton-trade or cotton-products, while the North profited the most.
