This is just a myth. Hitler juat didn't want to waste anymore tanks and fuel and men because he knew he wpuld need them in the east.
Planes however the nazis concluded they had plenty to fight against the russian wooden biplanes.
The german air force thus convinced hitler that they could wipe out the BEF on the beaches aith no need for a ground assault. The operation was somewheat succesful, with thousands of british dead for the lose of a handful of stukas and 109s.
Hitler resumed the assault when he realised that just bombing the allied forces on the beaches won't cut it, but by then it was already too late

Germany never stood a chance of successfully invading Britain. The BEF numbers wouldn't have made a difference. Germany could only hope to push Britain to a peace treaty, but even then that might've caused the Soviets to build up earlier.

This idea that Germany was close defeating Britain isn't really true but it has been romanticized as a heroic last stand against overwhelming odds. Fact is that Britain was an island fortress with a huge navy and a rapidly expanding airforce and Germany had a tiny navy in comparison with zero amphibious assault vehicles or experience. Also invading the UK would likely have brought the US into the war if they could get that far.

Which is OP's point. The German tanks would have wiped out the stranded British. Instead, they allowed them to escape, only attacking from the air, allowing them to live and fight another day. Thus, they were fighting a 2 front war when he pushed east into Russia. If Britain was knocked out of the war, it would only be fought on the eastern front.
