Most of that is atheist revisionism. More people willingly handed themselves into the inquisition than face the penalties imposed by the authorities because the inquisition was far more lenient. So as a Christian, who believes in the eternal life, you will sacrifice all kinds of opportunities for achieving the eternal life.
You love things that give you a higher chance of being part of this eternal life and you hate things that have a chance to destroy it.
Ergo, monogamy is good as it secures life.

Non-Religious here. People like us will, on average, be more likely to be guided by selfish urges than the average Christian. Let's not deny it. Now that doesn't mean we will all be out committing crimes, because a certain amount of morality is just obvious to most reasonably intelligent people regardless of religion (that's why we can more or less get by without it).
But generally speaking, Atheists will tend to have less of a problem with Hedonism than Christians.

Individuals have selfish urges, vanity, egotism, etc... these things can govern the individual if they are not careful. A main reason Liberalism tends to appeal to the non-Religious is because it gives the individual license to indulge in those selfish urges. This is one reason for the surge in degeneracy in recent years.

The whole point of religion is to tell you things you don't want to hear. You and I may (by sheer good luck, experience, good parenting, intelligence, etc) be self-aware enough to not need it, but frankly a lot of people do, and we have to live with those people. I'd much rather live in a society mostly made up of moderately conservative Christians than one made up of Liberal Atheists.
