Also meant to say that's only as far as being socially liberal goes. Europe is more economically socialist than the U.S. because socialism was popular from the moment that ideology graced quasi-feudal Europe with its very existence and, both before WW2 and after, has had enormous support with the common people. In fact socialism had so much popular support, it transcended left or right politics and had the support of full-fledged commies to nazis and everyone in between.
If you mean "why is Europe more economically liberal?" instead of socially liberal, the answer is because socialism is based.
