I can't think of anyone I know with a landline. I know my uncle/aunt did, but I haven't visited them in a few years. They did have one, but literally the only calls they got on that line when I visited were robocalls. I hope by now they've smartened up enough to just drop it.

They have infrastructure that is pretty expensive to maintain. One of the things africa has going for it, is that they don't have to pay to maintain any landlines, because they don't have any. They went straight from stone age, to the cell phone age. It's crazy to think about, but missing out on a whole stage of technological evolution can be beneficial in some cases. Just think if African big government types had rushed to get everyone in their shitty countries landlines through taxes 50 years ago. They couldn't just abandon such a huge investment. They'd have to keep at least some of it around while the poorer people caught up. But since they did nothing, they actually benefited, because they could skip that level of technology and jump straight to cell phones.

If you're in the US (and you are) and they are still using copper (which most places do), the landline still works when the power goes out.

I only have a landline now, owned a cell phone for about 6 weeks in the last 2 decades, couldn't stand that shit.

That's not correct. The vast majority of land lines are only carried over copper during the last mile (rather, last fifty feet). Everything beyond your neighborhood is over fibre, same as your internet and TV. The fibre connection requires power at the transmitter, so it will go dark soon after the "emergency".
