I was a NEET for 8 years. I was getting no where in college and due to the 2008 recession I couldn't even get a job where I would make more money than having my parent declare me as a dependant for tax deductions.
Only from a sheer luck of timing at one particual moment I managed to secure my self a career. Without it, I probably would have stayed NEET and offed myself when my parents die.

I've been NEET and known dozens of other NEETs (online and offline) and I'm pretty sure the cause is a lack of social support. Without exception, every NEET I've known has had emotionally distant and uninvolved parents who do not teach them how to be adults. NEETs don't really have friends either, if they are they're "long-distance". Because they have no meaningful relationships, NEETs are never encouraged, taught anything, emotionally supported or guided in life. Normal people have friends and family who spend time with them when they're sad and help them do new things (getting into hobbies, finding work, going on a course). Normal people live life knowing they have good people to help them, NEETs are always lonely people and this is why they end up getting anxiety and depression.
I can see NEETs disappearing when life becomes too hard (lots are forced back into society this way and become normal) or when people start being better parents and friends to them.

It's easier to make excuses than to make hard choices. I play online games for a couple.of hours a week and my friends constantly whine about not having jobs or savings but spend more time playing and chasing dopamine hits from Vidya achievements than applying. A lot of them have a huge ego and refuse to apply for work 'below them', when I take time out my day to find jobs on Craigslist or Indeed for things like labor, painting, coat check, retail, or temp agencies for them they won't apply because it's not what their 100k degree covers so I stopped trying to help. I don't invite any to work at my job anymore because they are lazy and don't want to wake up early or work long shifts even if it's just 3 days a week. I don't talk about my job to them anymore because they just whine endlessly about being broke but will never do anything about it until their parents cut them off or die, the neetbux run out, or they finally get tired of being parasites on the government and hit 40 with nothing to show for it.

There are plenty of jobs except those jobs need qualifications so that's why it's important to take the most out of school and the education system so you can work one of those jobs.
However schools/collages/universities have turned into some sort of social place where the students think it's important to have fun more than taking the time to learn something so they can have a decent career. Now schools have a majority of dropouts, students that study easy but meaningless subjects and lazy students that half ass their studies thus causing an influx of people that are limited to min wage jobs.
So basically the reason why lots of young adults complain about why there aren't any jobs? because those min wage jobs are taken and in high demand for the unemployed. Good luck trying to talk your way into a McCuck job when you're competing against high school kids that will get paid 2x less than you
