It's like a sales tax, only instead of the tax only being at the end point of sale, it is at every part logistical process. You pay tax when you buy from the store, the store pays tax when it buys from the distributor, the distributor pays a tax when it buys from the factory, the factory pays a tax when it buys from the plastic supplier, the plastic supplier pays a tax when it buys from chemical supplier, and so on and so on all the way back to the point of origin for every aspect of life, it's a tax on every single financial transaction that "adds value" and nothing is exempt. The vast majority of all social programs are detrimental to the health of nations in the long term even if its not obvious at first. The best case is Europe were their introduction of these programs unintentionally killed the incentive to have kids due to the fact you had a safety net and thus didn't need three people and their families to help you when retirement hit. It has also made these nations lethargic and more accepting of the actions of their governments take hence why they were initially accepting of refugees. Even though they have started to realize the consequences of this, Europe is doomed to the same fate of America with demographic change albeit it more slowly (for now at least). The only acceptable program is to ensure colleges remain cheap while ensuring they gut useless degrees to ensure everybody has a chance but the moment they are finished with their needed degree they are on their own.
