1) new franchises, which means new real estate and land ownership; and
2) supply chain logistics efficiencies

In reality, the McDonald's of the world aren't driving profit through the sale of hamburgers; they're making money via real estate growth/purchase and franchising revenues driven by extremely efficient delivery/production of raw materials to the franchise owners.

A smaller restaurant chain will not be able to replicate this.

$15 will not bother the mega-conglomerates (wal mart/mcd's/target) at all - it will benefit them by creating an unnecessary barrier to entry for new competition.
