Nobody knew how quite how catastrophic the faulty design was going to be, or rather how possible it was that the consequences of this fault were actually going to be exposed. It’s a case of part negligence yes, but also the power of hindsight.

Yes when it comes to something as serious as this, people will drag out the phrase about how heads have to roll or whatever, but if you actually applied this idea in practice no one would ever work in the nuclear industry or indeed any other.

It’s not that the show was totally deceptive or anything, most of its scenes were admirable accurate. The problem is that where they twisted the truth it was overwhelmingly to push an agenda and because they thought what actually happened wasn’t obviously anti-Soviet enough so they had to ‘sex it up’ to get their agenda in.

Hence the ‘fly into the reactor or you’ll be shot’ scene, the ‘stupid fat Party boss who used to work at a shoe factory’ scene, the ‘sissy coal minister’ scene, the KGB scene, and the hiding-the-tapes scene (ironically in reality Pravda no less actually went out of their way to publish in their pages what was essentially a transcript of those tapes after our scientist hero took his life).

Which are no panacea - the Fukushima containment buildings were blown apart. The sad fact of the matter is that before the explosion at Chernobyl happened, the possibility of such a blowout was an unknown unknown. Truly safe designs can only be obtained by going from disaster to disaster and taking the appropriate lessons, in stead of clouding our judgement by blaming an easy villain, like "subhuman Slavs" or "godless communists".

Disasters will happen. Apart from the earliest reactions, the Soviet authorities worked miracles in the aftermath of Chernobyl containing the damage. We should learn all we can and not sit back in smug superiority.
