It’s not just dull sequels, preachy politics, remakes of remakes, or streaming services that hurt sales. People WANT to go to an afternoon at the theatre. Box office sales will continue to die off until the movie theatres begin to close. Why? Because the middle class is dying.
Generational welfare mothers aren’t going to take their 3+ kids to see a lot of movies. Illegal immigrants and their stair-step anchor babies aren’t going to fill the theatres, either. Middle class families with CHILDREN are the ones who go to the theatres. Generational welfare and third worlders are financial burdens largely felt by the middle class. These financial burdens mean having fewer children, or no children at all.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 should have been a box-office smash. It’s summer and children are out of school. It also has relatively no competition right now from other movies geared towards children. That movie should have made a lot of money, but it didn’t. Why? Because the middle class has shrunk to near extinction. The movies the middle class are going to take their children to see are the Star Wars films, because the parents also want to see these movies. “Kids, we’re going to wait until that movie is available for free at home” is a phrase I imagine has been uttered thousands of times this summer… Or not uttered at all, because they have no children.
And what do the actors in Hollywood do? These top 1% who live in rich, mostly white, gated communities? They preach hatred against white people. They advocate for open borders. They push for the middle class, their audience, to pay for all of this. Then when movie sales flop, they viciously blame these people, claiming they “hate women” or they’re “racist,” or whatever
Box office hits used to be a decent premise released at the right time that was done well, but there was an artistic vision behind it. Now it's a cut and dry money intensive CGI polished product, one that must be approved by committee. The thought process isn't "I'm making my movie," it's "we're making a movie for the broadest audience possible," or one particular audience. That and people just don't leave the house as much.

I did take my wife to the indie theater last week because they were showing Pulp Fiction and she never saw it in a theater. It was literally projected on screen from a DVD. They had burgers, milkshakes, and beer, and people spent the whole movie riffing because everyone has seen it before. theatres dying are mostly due to the culture of cablecutting in general. television media has been proven to be vastly cheaper in this day and age by streaming services. they no longer have the monopoly on cable and movie theatres that they used to. It's why HBO shows doing well is a big deal because it shows that TV can still have an effect on mass culture but that is still not enough. The only thing that gets ratings these days for television are 1) Live Sports 2) News which is why they push both a lot because its the only audience where they own all the rights and even number 2 (news) is kinda iffy.

I don't know all about "surround sound" but big screen TVs are super cheap now. You can get a 55 inch tv, even if it's not the best screen quality, for under $300 now. Years ago you could only get 32 inch TVs for $300. Now it seems like 50 inch is the "new" 32 inch like how before 32inch hdtvs became the most popular size after 19 inch crts.
Hell even during Black Friday there were 65 inch TCLs on sale for just $399. I think 50-55 inch might be the limit for most bedrooms no matter how bigger is better.
