It's pretty simple: we were raised expecting killer bees, atomic bombs, death by STDs, acid rain, overpopulation, ozone layer, but mostly the atomic bombs I just mentioned. We all figured out early on that Social Security is going to run out just as we can retire.

Collectively, we're the generation that was raised to believe we have no future. We haven't escaped it yet. We're not edgy nihilists, we were just taught that we were going to be exterminated one way or another, assuming that we just didn't fall into some Onions Green dystopian hell.

We saw when things were good, when we were kids, but we were reminded of how bad the future was going to be and we saw it all disintegrate in front of our eyes. We saw what we could get our hands on decay, and anything good just got too far away.

the biggest difference seems to be in how much each generation appreciates technological advances and copes with change, pre internet kids saw their world transformed and brains developed in a period that only normalized constant change and embracing it, but ones born into that world seem to no be affected by this, they kind of drop out of reality and fixate on one thing now, assuming whatever changes that will be drastic in their lives are only going to be in terms of making life easier, so many of them probably have difficulty justifying hard work on a personal level because they think society is gonna take care of them.

but you know what else, those weren't the good times, and despite how fucked society is, I wouldn't want to go back to the dark ages. i'm probably not even old enough to fully appreciate the emotional compromisation of nostalgia. there was no tech, no shitposting, everyone had extremely limited dietary options (maybe why they look so old now) you enjoyed the things you did because you genuinely didn't know another way of life, and that feeling is what you miss.

It's hard for the younger generations to understand that you could just go to a mall and hang out, or that you could walk around and not get mugged, and that nobody told you that you were inherently an oppressive person because you were white or because you have a dick. You could get a car for a reasonable price and just maybe even work on it a little bit yourself. You could go to college without too much in loans.

We got to see all of that, and then it just kind of evaporated by the time we were old enough to understand what we lost. I fear our generation has a sense of loss which only we can understand -- the Boomers would babble their usual platitudes, the younger generations would start their pre-programmed chants about privilege.

I thought about this very subject few days ago as yet another one of my mothers co-workers dropped dead.
It's like my father's boomer generation survives nearly everything and many of them look somewhat young for their age, but Gen X looks like utter shit and doesn't seem to make it past their early 50s.
Got to be some lifelong stress factor at play that has eroded Gen X lifespan like a motherfucker.
From what I hear many Gen X folks had a pretty crappy youth and they basically rebelled, abused their bodies and did a lot of drugs, where as boomers had it way easier and happier.

The more time that goes by the less nutriousous the food is. The soil is depleted. You can counter this with supplements and a vegetable and fruit heavy diet. The meat has gotten worse so eat less of that.

Drinking high ORAC tea throughout the day helps too. Basically, there are more stressors and oxidizing factors in society and you have to double up on things that counteract that.

Real talk, look up Generations by Strauss & Howe. They predicted this in '91. Basically, Gen X fit into the Reactive generational archetype -- forgotten as children during the "spiritual awakening" of the '60s, aging into highly independent, individualist, pragmatic risk-takers. They're adventurers and entrepreneurs, so you have a lot of big failure at one end and big success at the other. The previous Reactive cohort was the Lost Generation that was ravaged by World War I.

There's a ton of truth to this. Gen X has lived through the transition of the world before and after 9/11 fully on both sides. Have you seen US presidents and how they age 20+ years before and after office? Very similar mechanism taking place.

In my country, they were the first generation forced into superannuation (ie 401K) while being taxed heavily to pay for the pensions of their parents and grandparents. All at a time when cheap labour is being imported from overseas at an unprecedented rate.
70% of Australia's wealth is in the hands of boomers and Gen X is expected to support the boomers, themselves and their kids all at once, while cheap NZ, Indian and Chinese labour cores out their jobs and sends house prices sky high. Any wonder they drink, take drugs and kill themselves? They're the most nihilistic and fucked-over generation since the 1940's.

Have you ever seen heroine addicts? Gen X'ers got hooked on oxycontin and then they moved on to heroine. Some try and use meth too as a futile "seasaw" of their energies, and Breaking Bad more or less normalized meth to people who are the lowest common denominator in society, making this "seasaw" tendency even more common. Combining uppers and downers is bad for the heart. Both meth and heroine kills the appetite too, but that caloric energy has to come from somewhere so it comes from their body fat. Hence, the sunken skin, premature aging look.
