I'm going to come at this from the perspective of a Chinese person, so bear with me.

In ancient China back when you idiots were still wearing bear skins and hitting each other with clubs, a guy called Kong Qiu. You might know him as Confucius. He was a philosopher who correctly identified that there are exactly two (2) kinds of people in the world. Useful people who are rightly ordered and virtuous, and useless people who are disordered and evil.

Now, in China, after millennia of warfare, bureaucratic administration, self-reorienting political upheaval and deliberate education, we came to the conclusion that the only logical thing to do was to encourage every person to be useful and virtuous, and to destroy useless and evil people. Mandarin bureaucracy, legalism, Confucian values. We promoted the birth of righteous people by awarding those who demonstrated ability with sexual power. We separated the weak and inept from the strong and adept through war. Through 5000 years of uninterrupted effort, we have gradually strained our race of inferior people. Mao Zedong literally exiled successful people to the countryside, not because he hated them, but because he wanted them to become rural and thus breed more, encouraging the system. We even destroyed our own culture because it had become decadent and corrupt, because we knew that we could recreate our values in a more primal sense because our GENES had been trained to do so.

And, as usual, Europeans caught on to our plan in the last ten minutes, and decided to do the same thing, but to skip the whole 5000 year thing. I say this with respect to you and your people. You did the exact opposite of what we did, but with what I assume is the same end. You simply made it legal for inferior people to kill their own children.

Suffering and strife are a form of eugenics in and of themselves, so you can see that North and Western Europe are actually the LEAST well situated to deal with the coming troubles. Cruelty has always been a part of Chinese culture. I suppose an answer to this is, we do not treat animals any worse than we treat criminals. It used to be a common practice to tie men to poles and slice pieces of them off with a knife until the crowd got bored, at which point they would be killed with a stab to the heart or lungs.

Because our people are inured to cruelty and violence against their own, does it not logically follow that we would be especially inured to violence against animals?

I do not approve of it, nor do I excuse it, but explaining something is different from excusing it. Parts of China have been effectively ruled by serial killers for centuries, and that is just a fact of the geopolitics of China, there is no way to unite the North South and West without having people who rule with despotic methods running at least one of them, and that sort of governing naturally creates a pathological society.

I could actually give a whole explanation of this in and of itself. In fact, I will.

So a large part of understanding Chinese politics is understanding the geography of China. Since time immemorial there have been three major regions of China which could actually be controlled by a central authority. The North, the South, and the West.

Northern China is poor as shit, but very largely rural, has a lot of people, and has always been militaristic.
Southern China is mercantile. It has all of the major ports, it has very little fertile land, but it also has navigable rivers and access to the Yangze.
Western China is poorer than shit, it's a desert and a little bit of jungle. This is where I used to live.

Now understanding Chinese political history means recognizing that there is ZERO commonality between these kingdoms. The North always has the most power, but it cannot project that power onto the other two. The South always has the most money, because it trades with other countries/nations and it is impossible to invade. The West is worthless so nobody wants it, but the people who live there are impossible to control, and also a bunch of them are Muslims.

So, how do you build a country out of this? Well, you get two kingdoms to agree to dominate the third. The result historically is something like this. The North has military manpower. They fight with the South until they come to an agreement, usually that the South gets favorable taxes, and then they work together to wreck the West. The one time this DIDN'T happen was in the 3rd century when the South and the West combined to wreck the North, but in the end the Jin (North) still ended up running the country, so it was a futile effort.

Today, the communist party deals in compromises. The South funds construction projects that serve no actual purpose in the West. The North provides calories and military power to both, and the West gets unlimited free money to build cities that nobody lives in. They also wildly overrepresent the West in the party itself to make sure nobody gets shafted.

So when you look at all of this, this gigantic clusterfuck, this is like if Italy France and Britain all decided to somehow form a country.

The only possible way to run this is through two institutions: The Intelligence Services, and HUGE bureacracy. And that means you're going to have a public sector with the population of... Uh... China.

And the result of that is despotism. Powerful men naturally rise to control huge elements of Chinese society, and the sort of people who rise to power in such institutions are almost always gigantic dickheads. Or worse, you get Northern warlords who come in and kill the bureacrats who held power--but they're huge dickheads who have armies.

Given this fact, is it any surprise that a large portion of Chinese culture is totally sociopathic? How couldn't it be? Imagine if Margaret Thatcher had slit a man's throat on television every day for her entire reign. Would it be outlandish to assume that slitting peoples' throats would stop phasing people after three or four months? That is what happened in China. We HAD to rule through violence and fear. And the result of that is the normalization of cruelty.

Again. Not a good thing, but the alternative was Chinese Balkans. Would you like to live in Chinese Serbia? No. So you do what you need to do, and if that means that people no longer see a problem with boiling puppies alive, well, that's better than letting Dong Zhou run the fucking country.
