North-western NC here in a nearly 98% white county.

I really liked western NC actually. Asheville was nicer than the city Im from in Ohio. I can't speak for the Appalachian region, but in the west/rocky mountain states, they are very much against outsiders. If you didn't grow up there, then you don't belong. The reason for this is because of liberals moving into their states, primarily Californians. It's very difficult to fit in when you move to Montana, Idaho, or Wyoming, regardless of how right wing you are.

July/August in Appalachia is extremely hot and humid. The mosquitoes will be awful. Just dress in breathable clothing and buy some DEET or Picaridin based insect repellent.

Try to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains. Possibly check out some old mining towns. Also just get out and drive. You can see some really interesting stuff and abandoned structures by just heading up the nearest hollow (pronounced holler).

I'm from East Tennessee man. The area of Poland I'm in is very flat with rolling hills. But they do look similar and the people generally keep to themselves.
