They take peoples money and fund a PR campaign talking about the wonder of space exploration when in fact it would take 40k years just to reach the next nearest star just to see more worthless rocks. Our position in the galaxy makes contact with other intelligence physically impossible. Ever. It would be remotely possible if aliens resided in our solar system at any point past, present or future. But outside its absolutely impossible because of the distance and the basic lifespan of any species.
So people marvel at this stuff so that they never ask about the actual billions spent to sustain a launch area and network to keep putting telecom and military satellites up that actually just tighten the grip of the elite over everyone else. Look up operation paperclip when the US got as many German Nazi scientists in positions of power in Germany and brought them over to work on our tech. They formed NASA with many of those people. Look up the formation of the CIA. Personally I do not believe those German scientists who had political influence and ingenuity as well just completely gave up on any aspiration to power and went along with the show.
