That's what the weekends are for. I work for a Big 4 and get on average 5 hours of sleep on the weekdays. Yesterday I went to bed at 10pm and woke up today at 10am. That's a solid 12 hours and a good catch up.

Anyways, its a trending thing on the West coast in particular because of high property values, and wages on the West coast don't really meet housing costs on average, even for people making what is decent money in other places i.e. 70-90k a year (albeit most people would still prefer to live in a studio or have an apartment with a roommate).

Good programmers will always be hard to come by. The market is saturated at the entry level, but it's generally the same as it always has been at the senior level.

Traffic isn't the best. With no traffic I could drive into work in about 20-25 mins but it usually takes me maybe just over an hour.
Having extra disposable income and a car is way better than living in the city, especially if you can't even afford to do anything in the city after you've paid your rent.

A distinction ought to be made: translating instructions is not the same as designing the computational logic being performed. Before the advent of modern compilers, higher level languages and tools it was a more difficult job due to hardware restrictions (slower processors, less disk space and RAM...), you had to actually design efficient code and there were not highly optimized compilers to translate higher abstract languages into efficient machine instructions.

Software engineers, and engineers in general, are made way better in the US than in Europe. In Europe the highest paid jobs are bankers and lawyers.
