We were occupied by allied forces, when we had the chance we joined with Axis forces (especially in Algeria/Tunisia/Libya). We also have Erwin Rommel symbolism up until today in some of our remote villages.

For the German officers, the Balkans were just a nasty distraction with lots of partisans, for which they had to spare German troops, multiple SS groups, gendarmerie, police forces, Wehrmacht and garrison units, thousands of qualified men in total, that they could use otherwise and elsewhere.
