The level of discourse and use of the English language in a rag like playboy from the 1970s puts the snobbiest intellectual news or magazine in print today to shame. The magazine had multiple pages of articles for and against Vietnam, domestic and international politics, letters to the editor regarding fucking space travel, and so on.

It blew my mind how much the level of public discourse and discussion had to have fallen these last 50 years if a historical Playboy magazine is intellectually blowing contemporary news literature out of the water.

Playboy magazine paid enormous amounts of money to authors and writers, their rate per word was something like 10 to 100 times higher than other magazines because they could afford to pay that much in order to buy respectability.
People really did read playboy for the articles, it wasn’t just a meme. Look at the bibliographies for famous writers active in the 70’s and 80’s, you will find that many of the most successful writers wrote (non-pornographic) stories that were originally published in Playboy.
