It's not butchering, we tend to be understanding when it comes to that, and I know a lot of folks of German extraction here (family members even) who have mastered it quite well. The internal logic is somewhat alien to the Indo-German family tree, but then if you meet people with at least half a brain here, chances are they'll speak either German or English or both.

If you don't mind getting your balls stewed in your own sweat in summer, I recommend the transdanubian hills. Quite a lot of wineyards around here, speech flows more eloquently when mildly (or severly) intoxicated. I remember my godfather (German) picking cucumbers with his local buddy, they didn't understand a word of eachother, but the rapport they came to after some spitzers in the scorching sun was a sight to behold.
