The thing about gassing kids is pretty easy to question for anyone with a brain and there doesn't seem to be any good proof that he did it, I think, but what about the videos of tanks attacking protesters and stuff? Are those real? I'd probably still support him even if they were, but I'm just curious to know how much of an "evil dictator" Assad really is, and which claims about him are more accepted as truth

it all started with the arab springs
people have a sorry misconception about what happened in the arab countries, having the idea that some organic rebellions rose up against a tyrannical regime, but that isnt the case
in syria for example, two of the main factions are the FSA and SAA. The former are the Free Syrian Army, which the mainstream press presented as the ''organic rebellion'', but who are actually, for the most part, a mix of paid mercs and jihadists, supported by USA, kikes, turkey, egypt, and saudis.
The SAA, Syrian Arab Army, are Assad loyalists which are trying to prevent Syria from becoming Lybia 2.0, wherein the power vacuum left after Ghaddafi's death lead to a splintered nation led by, on one side, a western puppet and on the other, ISIS terrorists (on this topic, france egypt and turkey are trying to interfere again through general al-haftar, in order to fuck us over).
the mainstream press played the trope of good guy rebels vs bad dictator angle, and the sarin gas propaganda was designed to encourage exactly that. While there is no doubt that Assad ruled Syria with an iron fist, jailing protesters for years and dispatching the military upon rioters, his rule is overall more preferable for the country and for everyone that is not a rich elite
arabs dont give a shit about democracy for the most part. and nobody can now argue that lybia now is better off than syria. Moreover, Assad comes from a religious minority and has so far protected others (including christians) living in Syria which would otherwise be slaughtered if he were toppled.
Like I said before, the main reason why the US side is so eager (or was) to get rid of him was to have access to the pipeline (which Assad did not allow), which would hurt Russia (which is Assad's top ally) as it would allow the EU to stop depending on Russian resources. It's just another proxy war between US and Russian interests.

When it comes to Assad, i suggest watching his interviews. He is usually seated with a critic sent by the opposition, his demeanor and his responses are quite admirable. He seem genuine but is clearly also very educated and clever. it's difficult to know, but he seems ok to me.

The Saudis want to build an oil and gas pipe line through Syria, this is the true story.

Assad doing chem attacks etc are just fake news and false flags for interference and invasion purposes in Syria. They use these false flag stunts to justify attacks against Assad. Assad is fighting ISIS and other manufactured 'terror groups' who are financed and managed by Saudis and 5eye agencies who were bribed by the Saudis to participate in this.

Everything is about these pipelines.

But I don't understand why the US supports this pipe idea. It would be a direct business rival for US oil and lng gas. This pipe would take away money from the US economy.

The EU doesn't want to buy Saudi oil, as it finances terrorism and other problems indirectly.

I would prefer lng gas and oil from North America to Saudi/Qatar oil. Everyone would be better off with this option. Not getting easy money from oil and gas would force these middle eastern countries to develop and modernise their economy and society.
