Either everyone has free speech, or nobody does. And either everybody can be punished, or nobody should be. That's where consequences is the biggest sticking point. The value of free speech isn't who it defends but how it forces conversation to be conducted. Believing in free speech isn't grudgingly admitting that it's in the Constitution so you'll respect it if you have to and using it opportunistically when it suits you, but believing that when people can speak their mind the truth will rise to the top. It's believing that the truth is best discovered through open discourse, and that only the dishonest have any interest in ensuring that certain ideas don't get expressed.

It's upsetting that so many Americans are raised without any concept of the reasoning behind the government they live under.
