There's a very telling vid. A woman, unaware that she's taking part in an experiment, is left in a waiting room filled with 'experiment actors'. As they wait, occasionally a bell rings, and all the actors stand up for a few seconds, and sit back down.
I can't remember exactly how long it took for the woman to follow suit, but it wasn't long.
