Most places require a journeyman's license to work for yourself, but if you don't have one you have to work as an apprentice under someone else's licence.
Getting a journey man's license requires

The trades here don't get flooded with migrants because it is a skill and takes schooling and/or an apprenticeship that can years to get the hours just to take a test to become state certified.
I live in Michigan, I had to do a four-year trade school program, along side working full time as an electrical apprentice. Once I finished school (which was very cheap, only $1100 in tution a year) and got my 8,000 hours of on the job training I was able to take the state's licensing test. I now work for a factory (maintenance jobs are so cake) making 60K a year, and if I wanted to I could do side work and earn even more. I didn't land a super high paying job doing prevailing wage shit (ie government contracted jobs) because I don't want to be a contractor anymore, but you can make over 50-60 dollars an hour on those types of jobs.

I do landscape installation. What can be harder than that?
My dad has done the same all his life. His heart is outputting less than 27% due to four heart attacks yet can still walk fine. Still works the shovel from time to time. Still lugs 80+ pound retaining wall blocks with me from time to time. Most people with 27% EF rating are sucking oxygen and need breather breaks while walking.
I work with guys in their 50’s that can still unload six cubic yards of soil from a truck and wheel barrow it around like nothing.
I personal know of a few guys in business for themselves doing maintenance in their 70’s still working just fine.
A concrete man we refer work to is in his 60’s and claims to feel better today than he did in his 20’s.
None of these guys in business need to work. They work because they love to work and still able.

For what it is worth I went to college for accounting. Got a job at a public accounting office. 3 years later quit that and went back into the family landscaping business. Hated it when younger but love it now. Just a dumb landscaper humping pavers and trees while able to send extra to my mortgage monthly while still consistently packing over $1k/mo to savings.

Student loans are paid off. Just my mortgage remains. Less than 8 years till that bitch is done.

All of them had to do additional technical college and work experience before being signed off as having the right to work as a lisenced sparky in Australia. Australia has THE highest standards of training for electricians in the world. The only other country that is recognised for having the same lisence to work on arrival is New Zealand because they copied us. Generally speaking, we can work anywhere in the world on arrival, but no-one is considered good enough for Australia until we say so. Sparkys from Australia are basically employed as electrical engineers in third world countries before their own native population University educated engineers because our technical college training is better than their native University degree. Aussie sparkys are seen as the snobs of the trade world here, because generally if you are a deadshot dumbass you will never get qualified and will relinquish yourself to being a boiler maker
