My dad and great uncle were telling me stories about our community in the 70s. There was very little crime, blacks and hispanics both had families and got along. It was all good. The reason for this is because we had great union jobs and after graduating high school we could get good jobs in construction or factory work and start a family. No one wanted to be a gangster or anything because we had such a good life gaurenteed by the union, a secure career in blue collar labor that we enjoyed.
Problems started when the right-wingers got in power. Reagan and a Conservative Governor began smashing the unions, opening up free trade to deplete our wages so low they moved the jobs to Mexico. We had no opportunity so many of our young people became gangsters, rappers, drug dealers, criminals etc. Much of it was psychological, kids thought "there's no jobs or opportunity for me so why not be a criminal" rather than "I can't wait until after highschool so I can start a family and save up a portfolio".
It was the policies of the right, not the left that caused this. The labor union was very left-leaning and was pro-labor. Many were socialists and syndicalists who warned right-wing destructive policies would lead to the breakdown of the family unit and cause drugs and prostitution to increase. It is the LEFT not the right who opposes drugs, prostitution, and family breakdown. Personally I'm a Liberal Democrat but I 100% understand the logic and sentiment behind syndicalists and social anarchists because what they predicted happened.

Because no one actually understands grade 12 math, we memorize formulas. I'm in third year college and could not understand my younger cousins grade 12 math homework. We just memorize formulas and how to solve them based on patterns.
