Not really, anybody with a half ass idea can file a patent if they have the money, a concrete invention does not even have to exist. You just have to document a concept, and if somewhere along the line some actual engineer does manage to invent a similar device he would have to buy your patent to use your system. If he doesn't you can sue them for patent infringement. It's all a huge scam. Most of the "inventions" posted ITT are complete nonsense

they are nonsense as in many of those devices do not even exist. If I for instance document a concept for a computer that only requires as input device signals from the user's brain waves, I could potentially file a patent. But it's nonsense because I haven't invented that device at all, just the concept. Companies file such patents all the time. It's basically similar to buying a website and hoping that someday a company with the same name as that website will someday want to buy it from you. A headline saying "Google files patent for faster than light vehicle" doesn't mean that vehicle has been invented or can ever be invented

Here's something about the Jews I've been thinking about lately, not quite so relevant to the thread but I think it's important to ask regardless.
So, if you read the bible you can plainly see how active the Jewish religion is for a thousand years. The Torah was a living, breathing oral tradition that grew and expanded alongside the kingdom of Israel. Think, would King Solomon or David have studied the book of Isiah? Of course not, they were only halfway through what we now consider to be the Torah.
If you take the Jewish tradition literally, this was because Jews didn't have a religion per se. They didn't need one because they spoke directly to God. They didn't need to write anything down, because they were already communing with the living essence of The Lord of Hosts. The high priest would don his sacred garments, go into the holy of holies, and perform a sacrificial summoning ritual to speak directly to YHWH. Then the priest would relay God's will to the Levites and Cohanim who would speak it back to the people. And so tradition establishes that the Jews didn't need a religion because they had a living relationship with God.
But then, something happens. Right at the dawn of Christ, the Torah freezes. Never again does a high priest claim to speak directly to God. The Torah, which had been growing naturally since the exodus from Egypt, stops abruptly right before ~30AD.
Instead, the newly exiled Jews escape the destruction of the second temple and turn inward, never again attempting to contact God the way they admit to doing in the Torah. The Torah becomes the Talmud, no longer a living oral tradition but a static document that stops at around 50 BC. Where once the Jews claimed to recieve advice directly from God on command, they now claim to follow tradition and the exegesis as interpreted and debated by various rabbis. The high priest no longer scribes for God but instead regulates internal debates among the diaspora.

The Jews themselves claim to be God's chosen people. God seems to agree, according to what we now call the old testament. He spoke to the Jews directly and gave them commands, and their Torah proves that they believed they were in direct communication.
And then something happens. God either abandons them or they abandon God. If they continued to commune like they claim to have been doing for a thousand years, it would be in the Torah. There would be new prophets in the following centuries, the religion would grow as it had grown from 1000 BC to 1 AD. But it doesn't. It just stops. The rest of Jewish tradition becomes about preserving that millennium and debating the rules established, but it's from the perspective of a dead religion. From a Jews perspective, Judaism stops after the second temple. The rest of Jewish tradition simply becomes internal study and debate, completely foreign from the traditions established in the Torah.
