In Googles case its not about free speech per se. The problem is whether they are counted as a platform, or a private entity acting as a publisher. If former, they have certain corporate immunities lined by the section in OP's link but they can't act as political commentators. If latter, they can but then they are immediatly vulnerable for multiple antitrust cases in the US, this shitstorm already made Googles case way worse in the already ongoing antitrust case in the EU.
It is effectively about free speech along with facebook, twitter and google. Govt protections are useless if the private industry majes use of free speech impossible in the web where 70% of Americans share ideas. The central issue is free speech. Beithout reigning in these companies through any means possible its pointless to claim we have free speech at all. This doesn't require us to end privaye ownership, this only requires communications/social media to be treated as a special case and considered utilities subject to free speech protections.
